A group of women dissatisfied with their bodies are given makeovers and a boost to their self esteem.
How to Look Good Naked is the US version of a reality TV programme that first aired on Channel 4 (UK) in 2006, in which women who are insecure with their bodies are encouraged to strip nude for the camera.
The programme is unique among other similar makeover shows in that it never encourages participants to undergo cosmetic surgery or lose weight.
Format
The format of the show is based on the self esteem building exercises that a fashion stylist guides each woman through.
These include: Driving around in a van with a picture of the woman in question semi-nude on the side, asking passers-by what they think.
The response shown is positive, thus building the self esteem of the woman.
The stylist burns the woman’s underwear, replacing it with more flattering items, including ‘tummy tuck pants’.
The woman is photographed naked.
In the emotive finale, the woman parades down the catwalk with her new look in front of family and friends.
However, more recently the stylist has used different shock tactics to encourage women to love their bodies and feel sexy.
Women have posed naked in shop windows, and in the UK an image of semi-naked woman was published on the front of made-up newspaper ‘Naked News’ handed out on a busy London street, while women were stopped in the street to be asked if they have ‘Lady Lines’.
The U.S. version of How to Look Good Naked airs on Lifetime Television, and is hosted by Carson Kressley, from ‘Queer Eye for the Straight Guy’.
The show was promoted on The Oprah Winfrey Show, in addition to receiving rave reviews from the New York Times and the L.A. Times.
Its premiere was the biggest in the network’s 24-year history. The US version also airs on Channel Ten in Australia and E4 in the UK.
In Belgium is a show called “look good” or Nicely Naked.
There is also a Swedish version called Snygg Naken, an Israeli version called בעירום מלא (Be’erom Mal’e), a French version, Belle toute nue, which began on the M6 channel on 9 December 2008, and Polish version called Jak dobrze wyglądać nago, which will begin on TVN Style channel on March 2009.
How To Look Good Naked is directed by Diane DeStefano and Riaz Patel.
It stars Fawn, Michelle Bernard and Grae Drake.
