U.S. reality show based on the British series Strictly Come Dancing, where celebrities partner up with professional dancers and compete against each other in weekly elimination rounds to determine a winner.
Days after the selection of celebrity contestants for “Dancing with the Stars” season 7 was announced on “Good Morning America” on August 25, the promotional photos of the dancing couples have been put forward.
Exposing the 26 paired contenders, the starry images display each of the couples in striking dancing poses.
In this new season, “Dancing” fans will be presented with the teaming up of the most varied and the largest cast ensemble to date.
The coupling puts Grammy Awards-winner Toni Braxton with Season One champion Alec Mazo, actress/model/reality television star Kim Kardashian with defending champ Mark Ballas, “Hannah Montana”’s Jake Ryan, Cody Linley, with two-time “Dancing with the Stars” champion Julianne Hough and Olympic gold medalist Maurice Greene with two-time champion Cheryl Burke.
Other paired contestants include former Nsync member Lance Bass with newcomer Lacey Schwimmer, beach volleyball champion Misty May-Treanor with Maksim Chmerkovskiy, celebrity chef and author Rocco Dispirito with Karina Smirnoff.
Not all the international versions share this title. The format is distributed by BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC.
Australia was the first country to adapt the BBC show, and versions have also been produced in the USA (Dancing with the Stars (U.S. TV series), Brazil, Bulgaria, Argentina , Czech Republic, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Panama, Peru, Romania, Russia, Serbia,Slovakia, South Africa, Sweden, Turkey, and Ukraine.
The format has become popular internationally and was the world’s most popular television programme across all genres in 2006, reaching the Top 10 in 17 countries.
The show pairs a number of celebrities with professional ballroom dancers, who each week compete by performing dances, which are then given scores by a panel of judges.
Viewers are given a certain amount of time to place votes on their favorite dancers, either by telephone or (in some of the shows) by the Internet.
The couple with the lowest combined score (judges plus viewers) is eliminated and does not go on to the next week. This process continues until there are only two or three couples left, at which point one couple is declared the champion.
