The Hillsborough Disaster was a deadly human crush that occurred on 15 April, 1989, at Hillsborough, a football stadium, the home of Sheffield Wednesday F.C. in Sheffield, England, resulting in the deaths of 96 people, all of which were fans of Liverpool F.C..

It remains the deadliest stadium-related disaster in British history and one of the worst in international football.

It was the second of two stadium-related disasters to feature Liverpool supporters, the other being the Heysel Stadium Disaster in Brussels in 1985.

The match was an FA Cup semi-final clash between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. It was abandoned six minutes into the game.

The inquiry into the disaster, the Taylor Report, named the cause as failure of police control, and resulted in the conversion of many football stadiums in the United Kingdom to all-seater and the removal of barriers at the front of stands and terraces.

On 15 April 2009, fans of all sides totalling 28,000 people gathered at Anfield to pay their respects twenty years on, and starting at 3:06pm there were two minutes’ silence in memory of those who perished.

This included public transport coming to a stand-still. Nottingham and Sheffield also gathered for two minutes’ silences to pay their respects.

On 15 April 2009 Liverpool Football Club TV commemorated the victims of the Hillsborough Disaster with a series of broadcasts on the TV channel of the club.

In A Song For Hillsborough, LFC TV goes behind the scenes at Elevator Studios in Liverpool for the recording of a new specially-commissioned version of ‘Fields of Anfield Road’, an Anfield song based on the popular Irish tune ‘Fields of Athenry’, written by Pete St. John. The Lord Mayor, Councillor Steve Rotherham, Kenny Dalglish and Phil Thompson all speak in studio about why they’re proud to be involved in the project.
